The Nature of Pelican Island
Updated 3/05
This is our first virtual photo
album, and it is a tribute to Pelican Island, established in 1903 as
the first National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. The
recent centennial celebration highlighted the importance of
untouched nesting habitat. The photos on the CD
follow behavior of Brown Pelicans, Double-Crested Cormorants,
Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets and Woodstorks from
courtship, nesting activity, to fledgings. This is
an inspiring look into the little island that started a
conservation effort that became the National Wildlife Refuge
system. This CD has recently been updated to include a
Reference Guide that contains suggested reading sources, websites
and complimentary photos.
